Price for Dissolving Grade Wood Pulp in China (CIF) - 2023

The average dissolving grade wood pulp import price stood at $919 per ton in September 2023, with a decrease of -1.6% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 when the average import price increased by 0.6% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1,196 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from the United States ($1,154 per ton) and Brazil ($1,004 per ton), while the price for Japan ($855 per ton) and South Africa ($872 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (-1.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Price for Dissolving Grade Wood Pulp in China (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average dissolving grade wood pulp export price amounted to $34 per ton, which is down by -95.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a dramatic slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 31%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $1,220 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Korea.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Democratic People's Republic of Korea amounted to +3.4% per year.

Imports of Dissolving Grade Wood Pulp in China

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of dissolving grade wood pulp decreased by -3.1% to 3.3M tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 6.3%.

In value terms, dissolving grade wood pulp imports rose sharply to $3.6B in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +59.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
