The U.S. dominates in the global dissolving wood pulp trade. In 2014, the U.S. exported 855 thousand tonnes of dissolving wood pulp totaling 1,067 USD, 1% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was China, where it supplied 33% of its total exports on the dissolving wood pulp market in value terms, accounting for 18% of China's total imports.

Overall, the global dissolving wood pulp trade reached 4,423 million USD, with a CAGR of 13% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it showed growth, rising from 2,895 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 4,543 thousand tonnes in 2014.

In 2014, China (42%) was the leading destination of dissolving wood pulp imports, followed by Germany (13%), Indonesia (10%), India (7%) and the U.S. (5%). These five leaders made up 77% of global imports. The share of China increased significantly (+17 percentage points), while the share of Germany illustrated negative dynamics (-2 percentage points).

South Africa and Canada were among the other main global suppliers of dissolving wood pulp in 2014 with a combined share of 30% of global exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were the Czech Republic (increased by 2.7) and Finland (increased by 2.3). The U.S. strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 15% in 2007 to 24% in 2014.
