Price for Diols and Polyhydric Alcohols in Brazil (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average diols and polyhydric alcohols import price amounted to $2,110 per ton, increasing by 2.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 15% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $3,099 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($13,520 per ton), while the price for South Korea ($1,501 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Price for Diols and Polyhydric Alcohols in Brazil (FOB) - 2023

The average diols and polyhydric alcohols export price stood at $1,807 per ton in August 2023, increasing by 3.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 when the average export price increased by 19% month-to-month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $2,643 per ton. From October 2022 to August 2023, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Japan ($4,019 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($1,307 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports of Diols and Polyhydric Alcohols in Brazil

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of diols and polyhydric alcohols (excluding ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, d-glucitol) decreased by -2.6% to 38K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 14% against the previous year.

In value terms, diols and polyhydric alcohols imports surged to $108M in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 64%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports of Diols and Polyhydric Alcohols in Brazil

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of diols and polyhydric alcohols (excluding ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, d-glucitol) decreased by -6.1% to 19K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 15%.

In value terms, diols and polyhydric alcohols exports totaled $39M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +50.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 37%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
