South Korea Becomes Fastest-Growing Sorbitol Importer in Past Decade

Global Sorbitol Imports
In 2020, global sorbitol supplies imports decreased by -0.4% to 409K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In value terms, supplies contracted to $432M (IndexBox estimates). The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2010 to 2020.
The countries with the highest levels of sorbitol imports in 2020 were Japan (39K tons), Germany (34K tons), Poland (29K tons), Thailand (27K tons), Russia (26K tons), the Netherlands (23K tons), the UK (20K tons), South Korea (17K tons), Turkey (15K tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (12K tons), Canada (12K tons) and the U.S. (11K tons), together resulting at 65% of total volume. India (9.6K tons) occupied a little share of total imports.
In value terms, Poland ($38M), Japan ($35M) and the UK ($30M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2020, with a combined 24% share of global imports. Germany, Russia, the Netherlands, South Korea, Turkey, Thailand, the U.S., Canada, Taiwan (Chinese) and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
South Korea became the fastest-growing sorbitol importer in the past decade. From 2010 to 2020, supplies to South Korea rose from $3.1M to $19.2M, while in physical terms, they expanded from 3.4K to 17K tons.
In 2020, the average sorbitol import price amounted to $1,057 per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was the UK ($1,480 per ton), while Thailand ($651 per ton) was amongst the lowest. From 2010 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Top Largest Sorbitol Exporters Worldwide
In 2020, China (101K tons), distantly followed by India (56K tons), Indonesia (53K tons), Germany (23K tons), the U.S. (23K tons) and Italy (17K tons) represented the major exporters of sorbitol, together committing 89% of total exports. Belgium (12K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
In value terms, China ($73M), Indonesia ($37M) and India ($33M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2020, with a combined 62% share of global supplies.
