In 2022, the average export price for buckwheat, millet and canary seed; other cerealses amounted to $370 per ton, reducing by -2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, export price for buckwheat, millet and canary seed; other cerealses increased by +86.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $378 per ton in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($1,214 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($278 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In October 2023, the average import price for buckwheat, millet and canary seed; other cerealses amounted to $615 per ton, with a decrease of -33.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 46% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $2,413 per ton in August 2023; however, from September 2023 to October 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was France ($2,818 per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($345 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third consecutive year, the Czech Republic recorded decline in shipments abroad of buckwheat, millet and canary seed; other cerealses, which decreased by -10.1% to 32K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep contraction. The smallest decline of -1.9% was in 2021.
In value terms, exports of buckwheat, millet and canary seed; other cerealses declined to $12M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +56.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 48%.

In the immediate term, the global buckwheat market may face a shortage due to an export ban introduced in Russia. The country, being the largest producer and exporter of buckwheat, restricted exporting unprocessed buckwheat, coarsely ground buckwheat groats, and crushed buckwheat grain from June 5, 2021, to August 31. Russia took this step to preserve the volumes of the buckwheat grain for its domestic consumption and prevent a spike in prices inside the country.
