Potato Chips Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023
The average potato chips export price stood at $3,719 per ton in July 2023, with an increase of 27% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 87% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $4,230 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($5,003 per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($2,449 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lesotho (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average potato chips import price stood at $3,024 per ton in July 2023, which is down by -42.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 an increase of 139% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $6,778 per ton. From November 2022 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Latvia ($5,588 per ton), while the price for the United States ($1,230 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
