Plantain Price in Slovakia (CIF) - 2023
The average plantain import price stood at $745 per ton in August 2023, declining by -16% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 an increase of 12% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $1,179 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($1,281 per ton), while the price for Hungary ($106 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Plantain Price in Slovakia (FOB) - 2022
The average plantain export price stood at $1,425 per ton in 2022, rising by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 28%. The export price peaked at $1,430 per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Hungary ($1,736 per ton) and Austria ($1,657 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($1,202 per ton) and Malta ($1,580 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Plantain Imports in Slovakia
In 2022, supplies from abroad of plantains was finally on the rise to reach 10K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, plantain imports surged to $11M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
