Ecuador dominates in the global plantain trade. In 2014, Ecuador exported 6 million tonnes of plantains totaling 2,621 million USD, 12% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the Russian Federation, where it supplied 21% of its total plantain exports in value terms.

From 2012 to 2014, Ecuador was a net exporter of plantains. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms this difference was even more pronounced.

Belgium and Colombia were among the other main global suppliers of plantains in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2012 to 2014 were Mexico (+60% per year) and the Dominican Republic (+55% per year).

Ecuador's top 5 trading partners in 2014 were the Russian Federation, the U.S., Germany, Turkey and Belgium, with a combined 61% share of Ecuador's plantain exports. The shares of the Russian Federation, Germany and Turkey increased nicely (+6 percentage points), while the shares of Ecuador's other leading destinations demonstrated more modest growth.
