India (X tonnes) remains the largest banana producing country worldwide, accounting for X% of total production. Moreover, banana production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, China (X tonnes), threefold. The Philippines (X tonnes) held a X% share (based on tonnes) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Costa Rica (X%), Guatemala (X%), Colombia (X%) and Belgium (X%). The U.S. (X tonnes), Honduras (X tonnes), the Netherlands (X tonnes), Mexico (X tonnes) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Ecuador increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2017. At the same time, Mexico (+X%), the Netherlands (+X%), Guatemala (+X%), Cote d'Ivoire (+X%), the Philippines (+X%), the U.S. (+X%), Colombia (+X%), Belgium (+X%) and Costa Rica (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mexico emerged as the fastest growing exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2017. Honduras experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The Netherlands (-X%), Mexico (-X%), Guatemala (-X%), the Philippines (-X%) and Ecuador (-X%) significantly weakened its position in terms of the global exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest banana markets worldwide were Ecuador ($X), Costa Rica ($X) and Guatemala ($X), together accounting for X% of global exports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Belgium, Colombia, the Netherlands, the U.S., Cote d'Ivoire, Honduras and Mexico, which together accounted for a further X%.
Mexico (+X% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the last decade, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average banana export price stood at $X per tonne in 2017, rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2017, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017, when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. In that year, the average export prices for bananas reached their peak level, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2017, the country with the highest export price was the Netherlands ($X per tonne), while the Philippines ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by Costa Rica (+X% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, when it surged by X% year-to-year. Global imports peaked in 2017, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

The total import value increased an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Imports by Country
In 2017, the U.S. (X tonnes), distantly followed by Russia (X tonnes), Belgium (X tonnes), Germany (X tonnes), the UK (X tonnes), China (X tonnes) and Japan (X tonnes) represented the key importers of bananas, together constituting X% of total imports. Italy (X tonnes), the Netherlands (X tonnes), France (X tonnes), Canada (X tonnes) and Argentina (X tonnes) occupied the mild share of total imports.
Imports into the U.S. decreased at an average annual rate of -X% from 2007 to 2017. At the same time, the Netherlands (+X%), China (+X%), Russia (+X%), Argentina (+X%), France (+X%), Canada (+X%), the UK (+X%) and Italy (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest growing importer in the world, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2017. Japan, Germany and Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of the U.S. (X%) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2007-2017, the share of the Netherlands (-X%), Russia (-X%) and China (-X%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest banana markets worldwide were the U.S. ($X), Belgium ($X) and Russia ($X), with a combined X% share of global imports. Germany, Japan, the UK, the Netherlands, China, France, Italy, Canada and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
China (+X% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries over the last decade, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2017, the average banana import price amounted to $X per tonne, rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2017, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the average import price increased by X% y-o-y. In that year, the average import prices for bananas attained their peak level of $X per tonne. From 2009 to 2017, growth of the average import prices for bananas failed to regain its momentum.
Import prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest import price was Belgium ($X per tonne), while Argentina ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by Argentina (+X% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
