Exports from Ecuador increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2017. At the same time, Mexico (+X%), the Netherlands (+X%), Guatemala (+X%), Cote d'Ivoire (+X%), the Philippines (+X%), the U.S. (+X%), Colombia (+X%), Belgium (+X%) and Costa Rica (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mexico emerged as the fastest growing exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2017. Honduras experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The Netherlands (-X%), Mexico (-X%), Guatemala (-X%), the Philippines (-X%) and Ecuador (-X%) significantly weakened its position in terms of the global exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest banana markets worldwide were Ecuador ($X), Costa Rica ($X) and Guatemala ($X), together accounting for X% of global exports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Belgium, Colombia, the Netherlands, the U.S., Cote d'Ivoire, Honduras and Mexico, which together accounted for a further X%.

Mexico (+X% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the last decade, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average banana export price stood at $X per ton in 2017, rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2017, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017, when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. In that year, the average export prices for bananas reached their peak level, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2017, the country with the highest export price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2017, the average banana import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2017, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the average import price increased by X% y-o-y. In that year, the average import prices for bananas attained their peak level of $X per ton. From 2009 to 2017, growth of the average import prices for bananas failed to regain its momentum.

Import prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest import price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
