Plantain Price in Italy (CIF) - 2023
The average plantain import price stood at $1,157 per ton in October 2023, picking up by 16% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a noticeable increase from October 2022 to October 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.8% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, plantain import price decreased by -14.7% against August 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2023 an increase of 35% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,356 per ton. From September 2023 to October 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($1,182 per ton), while the price for Colombia totaled $1,142 per ton.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Plantain Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023
The average plantain export price stood at $1,034 per ton in August 2023, declining by -8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a slight expansion from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, plantain export price decreased by -22.6% against May 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 44% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,363 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to August 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($1,730 per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($623 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malta (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Plantain Imports in Italy
For the fourth consecutive year, Italy recorded growth in purchases abroad of plantains, which increased by 1.5% to 43K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +17.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, plantain imports reached $34M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +20.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +72.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
