In 2022, the average phenols; phenol-alcohols export price amounted to $1,212 per ton, with a decrease of -17.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 66%. The export price peaked at $1,701 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to the United States ($1,472 per ton) and India ($1,300 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($1,083 per ton) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($1,131 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (-0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight decrease. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,990 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was China ($2,318 per ton), while the price for Singapore ($1,115 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In 2022, overseas shipments of phenols; phenol-alcoholses decreased by -2% to 335K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 11%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 355K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, phenols; phenol-alcohols exports shrank rapidly to $406M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +30.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 220K tons, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, phenols; phenol-alcohols imports dropped dramatically to $261M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 72% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $330M, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
