Global phenol imports amounted to 3.9M tonnes in 2016, picking up by 2% against the previous year figure. Overall, phenol imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, when import increased by 9% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, global phenol imports attained its maximum volume of 4.5M tonnes in 2011- however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, phenol imports totaled $4.9B in 2016. Overall, phenol imports continue to indicate a drastic setback. Global phenol import peaked of $9.3B in 2011- however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Phenol Imports By Country

In 2016, China (727K tonnes), followed by Germany (464K tonnes), India (402K tonnes), the Netherlands (401K tonnes), Belgium (387K tonnes), Thailand (254K tonnes), and South Korea (185K tonnes) represented the largest importers of phenol, together comprising 72% of total imports. The following importers - Japan (154K tonnes), Poland (113K tonnes), the UK (91K tonnes), Switzerland (72K tonnes), and Italy (67K tonnes) together made up 13% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of phenol imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by India (+9.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest phenol markets worldwide were China ($792M), Germany ($534M) and India ($493M), together comprising 37% of global imports.

India (+4.2% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of phenol imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Phenol Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for phenol amounted to $1,247 per tonne, going down by -11.1% against the previous year. In general, phenol import price continues to indicate a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when it surged by 45% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, average phenol import price reached its maximum level of $2,076 per tonne in 2011- however, from 2012 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest import prices was the UK ($1,699 per tonne), while the Netherlands ($933 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of phenol import prices was attained by the UK (-0.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
