Which Country Imports the Most Phenols in the World?

Global pesticide imports totaled 5.3M tonnes in 2016, picking up by 6% against the previous year figure. Overall, it indicated a strong growth from 2007 to 2016: the total imports volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, pesticide imports increased by +71.4% against its level of 2007. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011, when import increased by 12% from the previous year level. Global pesticide import peaked in 2016, and are likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pesticide imports totaled $32B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a strong expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total imports value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, pesticide imports decreased by ;11.8% against its level of 2014. Over the period under review, global pesticide imports attained its maximum level of $36B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Pesticide Imports By Country

The imports of the twelve major importers of pesticide, namely Brazil, Canada, France, Australia, Germany, the U.S., Thailand, Belgium, Spain, Italy, the UK, and Viet Nam, represented more than third of total import.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of pesticide imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Australia (+19.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($2.4B), France ($2B) and Germany ($1.6B) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2016, together accounting for 19% of global imports.

Brazil (+12.3% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of pesticide imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pesticide Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for pesticide amounted to $6,007 per tonne, lowering by ;9.1% against the previous year. Overall, pesticide import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008, when import increased by 17% y;o;y. In that year, average pesticide import price reached its maximum level of $7,513 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average pesticide import price failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was Germany ($8,288 per tonne), while Thailand ($3,019 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of pesticide import prices was attained by Brazil (+2.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2016, China (727K tonnes), followed by Germany (464K tonnes), India (402K tonnes), the Netherlands (401K tonnes), Belgium (387K tonnes), Thailand (254K tonnes), and South Korea (185K tonnes) represented the largest importers of phenol, together comprising 72% of total imports. The following importers - Japan (154K tonnes), Poland (113K tonnes), the UK (91K tonnes), Switzerland (72K tonnes), and Italy (67K tonnes) together made up 13% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of phenol imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by India (+9.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest phenol markets worldwide were China ($792M), Germany ($534M) and India ($493M), together comprising 37% of global imports.
