Onion and Shallot Price in Kuwait (CIF) - 2021
The average onion and shallot import price stood at $358 per ton in December 2021, with an increase of 3.4% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2021 an increase of 11% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $446 per ton in July 2021; however, from August 2021 to December 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($1,008 per ton), while the price for Iran ($127 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2021 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Onion and Shallot Price in Kuwait (FOB) - 2022
The average onion and shallot export price stood at $258 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, onion and shallot export price increased by +39.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 44% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $311 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($1,782 per ton), while the average price for exports to Qatar ($137 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iran (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Onion and Shallot Imports in Kuwait
In 2022, supplies from abroad of onion and shallot decreased by -24.5% to 72K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 124K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, onion and shallot imports contracted significantly to $27M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment.
