Mandarin and Clementine Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

The average mandarin and clementine export price stood at $912 per ton in 2022, dropping by -11.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $1,030 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Portugal ($1,076 per ton) and Canada ($1,047 per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($796 per ton) and Ireland ($815 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Portugal (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average mandarin and clementine import price stood at $1,260 per ton in 2022, falling by -10.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 13%. The import price peaked at $1,413 per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($1,370 per ton), while the price for Swaziland ($411 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mandarin and Clementine Exports in South Africa

In 2022, approx. 520K tons of tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas were exported from South Africa; surging by 2.5% compared with the year before. Overall, total exports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +20.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +75.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, mandarin and clementine exports declined to $474M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +19.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +71.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 45% against the previous year.
