Lettuce and Chicory Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

The average lettuce and chicory export price stood at $1,231 per ton in 2022, growing by 1.7% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lettuce and chicory export price increased by +13.6% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 89%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($2,049 per ton), while the average price for exports to Zambia ($945 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Botswana (+19.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+38.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
