Which Country Consumes the Most Lettuce And Chicory in the World?

Global lettuce and chicory consumption amounted to 25,431 thousand tonnes in 2015, increasing by +1.8% against the previous year level. Overall, the global lettuce and chicory consumption indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained consistant, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +0.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +3% from the previous year level. In that year, the global lettuce and chicory consumption attained its maximum volume of 25,465 thousand tonnes. From 2013 to 2015, the total lettuce and chicory consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Lettuce And Chicory Consumption

With nearly 13,377 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading lettuce and chicory consuming country, mixed up 54% of global consumption. The other major consumers were the United States (3,548 thousand tonnes) and India (1,106 thousand tonnes), with a share of 14% and 4%, respectively. Moreover, lettuce and chicory consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by the United States fourfold. They were followed by Spain with a 4% of global consumption share and Italy with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of lettuce and chicory consumption in China stood at +1.4%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the United States (-2.5% per year) and India (+2.0% per year).

The highest levels of lettuce and chicory per capita consumption was registered in Spain (19.96 kg/year), followed by Italy (12.21 kg/year), the United States (11.02 kg/year), China (9.51 kg/year) and India (0.84 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of lettuce and chicory was estimated at 2.88 kg/year in 2015.

In China, per capita lettuce and chicory consumption has grown modestly (+0.8% per year) in recent years. In 2015, China per capita consumption reached 19.96 kg/year as compared with 8.89 kg/year in 2007.
