Which Country Produces the Most Lettuce and Chicory in the World?

In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the lettuce and chicory output was China (13,377 thousand tonnes), accounting for 54% of global production. Moreover, lettuce and chicory output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, the United States (3,548 thousand tonnes), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by India with a share of 4%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of lettuce and chicory producton in China stood at +1.4%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the United States (-2.5% per year) and India (+2.0% per year).

Global Lettuce and Chicory Production

Global lettuce and chicory production amounted to 24,596 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -1.5% against the previous year level. Overall, the global lettuce and chicory output pursued a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +0.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +3% from the previous year level. In that year, the global lettuce and chicory production attained its maximum volume of 25,463 thousand tonnes. From 2010 to 2015, the total lettuce and chicory output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global lettuce and chicory production was primarily driven by popularity of healthy eating and growth of population. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the lettuce and chicory output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a measured expansion of the harvested area and a slight contraction of the yield figures.

The world lettuce and chicory harvested area amounted to 1,166 thousand ha in 2015, which was almost equal to the previous year figure. The lettuce and chicory harvested area indicated a slight increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +0.8% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total lettuce and chicory harvested area peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand over the globe.
