In July 2023, the average leek import price amounted to $1,053 per ton, declining by -3.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when the average import price increased by 14% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1,579 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to July 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for China.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for China amounted to -1.3% per month.
Leek Price in Japan (FOB) - 2022
The average leek export price stood at $5,214 per ton in 2022, waning by -16.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 129% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $9,210 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($5,797 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($5,146 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Leek Imports in Japan
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in overseas purchases of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, when their volume increased by 2.1% to 48K tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt descent.
