Fiberboard Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average fiberboard import price amounted to $123 per cubic meter, almost unchanged from the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 13% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $143 per cubic meter. From January 2023 to September 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was China ($246 per cubic meter), while the price for Vietnam ($90.6 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Fiberboard Price in Japan (FOB) - 2023
The average fiberboard export price stood at $240 per cubic meter in September 2023, growing by 34% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.8%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was India ($2,048 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to China ($141 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Fiberboard Imports in Japan
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of fiber board of wood or other ligneous materials increased by 24% to 2.4M cubic meters in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, fiberboard imports soared to $326M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +45.2% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 22K cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
