Fat and Oil Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023

In August 2023, the average fat and oil export price amounted to $2,329 per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 13% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $2,737 per ton. From January 2023 to August 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Djibouti ($2,198 per ton) and Bahamas ($2,082 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($1,684 per ton) and Panama ($1,948 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (-0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Fat and Oil Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023

The average fat and oil import price stood at $2,517 per ton in August 2023, increasing by 6.4% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight decline. The import price peaked at $2,985 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ireland ($4,955 per ton), while the price for Spain ($1,063 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ireland (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Fat and Oil Exports in the United States

Fat and oil exports from the United States expanded significantly to 379K tons in 2022, growing by 14% compared with the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fat and oil exports soared to $897M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Fat and Oil Imports in the United States

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of fats and oils decreased by -3.7% to 290K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 9.2%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 301K tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, fat and oil imports surged to $763M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +21.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +78.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
