Ethanol Price in Serbia (CIF) - 2023
The average ethanol import price stood at $791 per thousand litres in October 2023, dropping by -2% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 7.3% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1.2 per litre. From January 2023 to October 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($783 per thousand litres), while the price for Bulgaria stood at $608 per thousand litres.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (-1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Ethanol Price in Serbia (FOB) - 2022
The average ethanol export price stood at $1.8 per litre in 2022, jumping by 29% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ethanol export price increased by +79.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($5.6 per litre), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($1.2 per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to North Macedonia (+15.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Ethanol Imports in Serbia
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of ethyl alcohol decreased by -0.8% to 11M litres in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +25.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +95.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 11M litres in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
In value terms, ethanol imports soared to $11M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 105% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Ethanol Exports in Serbia
In 2022, shipments abroad of ethyl alcohol decreased by -13.1% to 383K litres, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 172%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 1.2M litres. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ethanol exports expanded markedly to $688K in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 291% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $1.7M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
