Ethanol Price in Brazil (FOB) - 2023
In July 2023, the average ethanol export price amounted to $632 per thousand litres, falling by -4.4% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 8.9% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $759 per thousand litres in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In July 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Ghana ($785 per thousand litres) and Nigeria ($762 per thousand litres), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($618 per thousand litres) and South Korea ($620 per thousand litres) were amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Ethanol Price in Brazil (CIF) - 2022
The average ethanol import price stood at $0.7 per litre in 2022, surging by 24% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Paraguay ($0.7 per litre), while the price for the United States stood at $0.7 per litre.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+0.1%).
Ethanol Exports in Brazil
In 2022, the amount of ethyl alcohol exported from Brazil surged to 2.5B litres, growing by 27% on 2021 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 39%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 2.7B litres. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ethanol exports soared to $1.8B in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +21.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +77.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, imports of ethyl alcohol into Brazil dropped sharply to 312M litres, waning by -26.9% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports showed a sharp decrease. Imports peaked at 1.4B litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
