The general positive trend in terms output was largely conditioned by a relatively flat trend pattern of the harvested area and modest growth in yield figures.
In value terms, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres reduced to $1.9B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, global production of attained the maximum level at $2.4B in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Production By Country
India (1.2M tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, comprising approx. 42% of total volume. Moreover, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Sri Lanka (458K tons), threefold. Indonesia (196K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.1% share.
In India, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sri Lanka (+1.3% per year) and Indonesia (-1.5% per year).
Yield
The global average yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres fell to 2.3 tons per ha in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at 1.3M tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres dropped to $628M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +62.6% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at $714M in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

It was distantly followed by the United States (94K tons), achieving an 8.2% share of total imports. The UK (50K tons), Spain (34K tons), the Netherlands (25K tons), the United Arab Emirates (22K tons), Canada (22K tons) and Germany (19K tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre imports into China stood at +2.2%. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+10.4%), Canada (+7.7%), the UK (+6.6%), the United States (+3.5%), Spain (+3.0%) and Germany (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +10.4% from 2012-2022. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of China (-6.2 p.p.) decreased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($212M) constitutes the largest market for imported coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres worldwide, comprising 34% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($61M), with a 9.7% share of global imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 9.1% share.

In general, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +67.5% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 21%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 2.1M tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres reduced remarkably to $778M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 38%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $973M, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
Exports By Country
In 2022, India (1M tons) represented the major exporter of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, making up 54% of total exports. Sri Lanka (429K tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by the Philippines (6.3%). The following exporters - Vietnam (46K tons), Thailand (44K tons), Belgium (40K tons), Brazil (35K tons) and Kenya (32K tons) - each finished at an 11% share of total exports.
Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belgium (+33.4%), the Philippines (+21.6%), Kenya (+10.6%) and Sri Lanka (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +33.4% from 2012-2022. Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (-1.5%) and Vietnam (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+11 p.p.), the Philippines (+4.8 p.p.) and Belgium (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Thailand (-2.2 p.p.), Sri Lanka (-4.8 p.p.) and Vietnam (-7.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre supplying countries worldwide were India ($312M), Sri Lanka ($213M) and Kenya ($55M), with a combined 74% share of global exports. Brazil, the Philippines, Vietnam, Belgium and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
Belgium, with a CAGR of +15.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices By Country
The average export price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres stood at $416 per ton in 2022, dropping by -10.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $464 per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
