In June 2023, the average chocolate export price amounted to $7,692 per ton, with a decrease of -2.7% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated a temperate increase from June 2022 to June 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, chocolate export price increased by +3.5% against January 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 when the average export price increased by 16% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $7,906 per ton in May 2023, and then shrank in the following month.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($12,450 per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($3,566 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kosovo (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average chocolate import price stood at $5,651 per ton in June 2023, increasing by 2.4% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 an increase of 13% m-o-m. The import price peaked in June 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($8,276 per ton), while the price for Austria ($4,661 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Chocolate Exports in Croatia

Chocolate exports from Croatia expanded rapidly to 40K tons in 2022, increasing by 9.2% on the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chocolate exports rose significantly to $230M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 21%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Chocolate Imports in Croatia

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of chocolate and cocoa products decreased by -1.7% to 43K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 6.2%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 44K tons, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
