Which Country Exports the Most Chocolate and Cocoa Products in the World?

Global chocolate exports amounted to 5.6M tonnes in 2016, jumping by 2% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011, when export increased by 10% year-to-year. Global chocolate export peaked in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

In value terms, chocolate exports stood at $26B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a strong increase from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, chocolate exports decreased by -5.6% against its level of 2014. Over the period under review, global chocolate exports attained its maximum level of $28B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Chocolate Exports By Country

The exports of the twelve major exporters of chocolate, namely Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada, France, Poland, the U.S., Italy, Mexico, the UK, Russia, and Turkey, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of chocolate exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Poland (+11.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chocolate markets worldwide were Germany ($4.5B), Belgium ($2.9B) and the Netherlands ($1.9B), together accounting for 35% of global exports. These countries were followed by Italy, the U.S., Poland, Canada, France, the UK, Mexico, Russia and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 38%.

Mexico (+15.7% per year) had the highest rates of growth with regard to the chocolate exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Chocolate Export Prices By Country

The average chocolate export price stood at $4,736 per tonne in 2016, flattening at the previous year level. Over the last nine years it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%.The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, when export increased by 12% year-to-year. Over the period under review, average chocolate export price reached its maximum level of $5,094 per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Italy ($5,930 per tonne), while Turkey ($2,776 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of chocolate export prices was attained by Mexico (+10.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
