Chili and Pepper Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2022

The average chili and pepper export price stood at $3,258 per ton in 2022, waning by -5.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 21%. The export price peaked at $3,770 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Fiji ($3,846 per ton) and New Caledonia ($3,655 per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($3,144 per ton) and Japan ($3,215 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (-0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

The average chili and pepper import price stood at $4,023 per ton in July 2023, shrinking by -12.3% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 when the average import price increased by 686% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $7,749 per ton. From June 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Fiji ($6,298 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($2,344 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+13.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the amount of chilies and peppers (green) exported from New Zealand surged to 5.5K tons, jumping by 43% compared with 2021 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.9% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chili and pepper exports surged to $18M in 2022.
