Which Country Eats the Most Asparagus in the World?

Global asparagus consumption amounted to 8,241 thousand tonnes in 2015, moving up by +5.2% against the previous year level. Overall, the global asparagus consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +10% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global asparagus consumption attained its maximum volume of 8,305 thousand tonnes in 2012. From 2013 to 2015, the total asparagus consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Asparagus Consumption

With nearly 6,567 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading asparagus consuming country, mixed up 87% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Peru (251 thousand tonnes) and the United States (166 thousand tonnes), with a share of 3% and 2%, respectively. Moreover, asparagus consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by Peru more than tenfold. They were followed by Germany with a 2% of global consumption share and Mexico with a 1% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of asparagus consumption in China stood at +0.6%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Peru (+3.7% per year) and the United States (+6.1% per year).

The highest levels of asparagus per capita consumption was registered in Peru (8.01 kg/year), followed by China (4.67 kg/year), Germany (1.71 kg/year), Mexico (0.66 kg/year) and the United States (0.52 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of asparagus was estimated at 0.19 kg/year in 2015.

In Mexico, per capita asparagus consumption has grown noticably (+41.5% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Mexico per capita consumption reached 8.01 kg/year as compared with 0.04 kg/year in 2007.
