Chili and Pepper Price in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021
In December 2021, the average chili and pepper import price amounted to $502 per ton, falling by -12.5% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2021 an increase of 12% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $584 per ton. From August 2021 to December 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($1,579 per ton), while the price for Thailand totaled $454 per ton.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-0.3%).
Chili and Pepper Price in Malaysia (FOB) - 2021
In December 2021, the average chili and pepper export price amounted to $1,178 per ton, declining by -17% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2021 an increase of 57% m-o-m. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,500 per ton. From August 2021 to December 2021, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Singapore.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Singapore amounted to +0.7% per month.
Chili and Pepper Imports in Malaysia
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of chilies and peppers (green) decreased by 0% to 77K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, chili and pepper imports soared to $66M in 2022. Overall, imports recorded significant growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
