Canned Vegetable Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average canned vegetable export price amounted to $2,063 per ton, waning by -3.8% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 34% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $2,507 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to September 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($3,114 per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($1,436 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lesotho (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Canned Vegetable Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average canned vegetable import price amounted to $1,373 per ton, declining by -6.2% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 20% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,685 per ton. From May 2023 to September 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Spain ($2,719 per ton), while the price for China ($261 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+39.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Canned Vegetable Exports in South Africa
In 2022, overseas shipments of canned vegetables increased by 11% to 31K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decrease.
In value terms, canned vegetable exports soared to $66M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
