Butter Price in Australia (CIF) - 2023

In September 2023, the average butter import price amounted to $5,162 per ton, reducing by -9.9% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2023 an increase of 15% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $6,472 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($8,044 per ton), while the price for New Zealand ($4,695 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Butter Price in Australia (FOB) - 2022

The average butter export price stood at $5,454 per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, butter export price increased by +16.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 52% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $6,119 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($6,484 per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($3,772 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+23.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Butter Imports in Australia

In 2022, approx. 31K tons of butter were imported into Australia; growing by 7.9% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight slump.

In value terms, butter imports soared to $191M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Butter Exports in Australia

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of butter, when their volume decreased by -43.3% to 8.8K tons. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 37%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 16K tons, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In value terms, butter exports reduced sharply to $48M in 2022. In general, exports recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $84M, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
