In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the consumption volume increased by 6% against the previous year. The global book and brochure market revenue contracted modestly to $85.4B in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption, however, saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the market value increased by 3.7%. Over the period under review, the global market hit record highs at $117.9B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Consumption By Country

Poland (9.4B units) remains the largest book and brochure consuming country worldwide, accounting for 23% of total volume. Moreover, book and brochure consumption in Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, China (4B units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Russia (3.9B units), with a 9.3% share.

In Poland, book and brochure consumption increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+0.1% per year) and Russia (-4.9% per year).

In value terms, Japan ($24.6B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($11.1B). It was followed by the United States.

In Japan, the book and brochure market declined by an average annual rate of -5.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of market growth: Russia (-6.7% per year) and the United States (+5.3% per year).

Production

World Production of Books, Brochures And Similar Printed Matter

Global book and brochure production reached 42B units in 2022, approximately equating the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 5.2% against the previous year. Global production peaked at 43B units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, book and brochure production dropped modestly to $86.9B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 3.2%. Over the period under review, global production reached the peak level at $113.3B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Poland (9.6B units), China (6B units) and Russia (3.9B units), together accounting for 46% of global production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +12.6%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Books, Brochures And Similar Printed Matter

In 2022, global book and brochure imports fell slightly to 6.6B units, with a decrease of -1.6% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 8.7% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at 7.5B units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, book and brochure imports fell to $17.4B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at $18B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports By Country

The United States represented the major importing country with an import of about 1.5B units, which finished at 23% of total imports. France (530M units) took an 8.1% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the UK (8%), Germany (6.8%) and Hong Kong SAR (6.6%). Canada (243M units), the Netherlands (216M units), Poland (151M units), Belgium (146M units), Italy (134M units), Austria (113M units) and Spain (105M units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Canada (+12.4%), Poland (+7.2%), Italy (+6.3%), the Netherlands (+1.5%) and Germany (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Canada emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +12.4% from 2012-2022. Spain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.4%), Belgium (-1.5%), Austria (-2.2%), the UK (-2.5%) and Hong Kong SAR (-10.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United States (+14 p.p.), Canada (+2.7 p.p.) and Germany (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Hong Kong SAR (-10.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($2.9B), Germany ($1.7B) and the UK ($1.2B) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 33% of global imports. France, Canada, the Netherlands, Poland, Hong Kong SAR, Belgium, Austria, Spain and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +19.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

The average book and brochure import price stood at $2.7 per unit in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 4.6% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $2.7 per unit in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($4.2 per unit), while Hong Kong SAR ($1.1 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 9.5%. The global exports peaked at 8.8B units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, book and brochure exports declined to $17B in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $18B, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports By Country

China was the main exporter of books, brochures and similar printed matter in the world, with the volume of exports finishing at 2B units, which was near 29% of total exports in 2022. Germany (437M units) took a 6.3% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Hong Kong SAR (5.6%), the UK (5.3%), Italy (5.2%), the United States (5.2%) and Poland (4.5%). The following exporters - Spain (281M units), Belgium (227M units), the Czech Republic (168M units), France (152M units), Slovakia (144M units) and the Netherlands (135M units) - together made up 16% of total exports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of books, brochures and similar printed matter. At the same time, Poland (+9.4%), Slovakia (+6.3%), Belgium (+4.9%) and the Netherlands (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +9.4% from 2012-2022. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-1.8%), Spain (-2.3%), Italy (-3.2%), the UK (-3.8%), the Czech Republic (-4.2%), the United States (-6.4%) and Hong Kong SAR (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+4.3 p.p.), Poland (+3.1 p.p.) and Belgium (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the United States and Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -2.8% and -8.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($2.1B), the UK ($2B) and China ($2B) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 36% of global exports. Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Hong Kong SAR, Spain, the Czech Republic, Belgium and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +22.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average book and brochure export price stood at $2.4 per unit in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 9.2% against the previous year. The global export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
