Banana Price in Hungary (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average banana import price amounted to $901 per ton, falling by -3.2% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 an increase of 13% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1,126 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1,040 per ton), while the price for Croatia ($554 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Banana Price in Hungary (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average banana export price amounted to $1,013 per ton, increasing by 3.4% against the previous month. Over the period from August 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 13% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $1,079 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($1,037 per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania stood at $720 per ton.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+2.1%).
Banana Imports in Hungary
In 2022, purchases abroad of bananas decreased by -1.7% to 50K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 31%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 54K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, banana imports reached $42M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 27%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $43M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
