Banana and Plantain Price in Thailand (FOB) - 2023
The average banana and plantain export price stood at $985 per ton in September 2023, falling by -25% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2023 an increase of 20% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,313 per ton in August 2023, and then fell markedly in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($5,023 per ton), while the average price for exports to Myanmar ($444 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In September 2023, the average banana and plantain import price amounted to $263 per ton, growing by 3.6% against the previous month. Over the period from September 2022 to September 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 an increase of 9.5% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $283 per ton. From June 2023 to September 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($339 per ton), while the price for Lao People's Democratic Republic amounted to $257 per ton.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (+5.4%).
Banana and Plantain Exports in Thailand
In 2022, approx. 10K tons of bananas and plantains were exported from Thailand; reducing by -36.1% against the year before. Overall, exports saw a precipitous decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 2% against the previous year.
In value terms, banana and plantain exports shrank remarkably to $12M in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 9.4%.

Banana and Plantain Imports in Thailand
In 2022, purchases abroad of bananas and plantains decreased by -34.5% to 22K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 221% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 55K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, banana and plantain imports reduced markedly to $5.2M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 235% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $13M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
