China (212K tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of antisera consumption, comprising approx. 36% of total volume. Moreover, antisera consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, Belgium (48K tons), fourfold. The United States (37K tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with a 6.4% share.

In China, antisera consumption expanded at an average annual rate of +23.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: Belgium (+0.3% per year) and the United States (+12.9% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($65B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($21.4B). It was followed by Japan.

Production

After six years of growth, production of antisera and other blood fractions decreased by -31.1% to 617K tons in 2022. Overall, production, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak volume of 896K tons, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, antisera production reduced to $140.1B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 53% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $151B in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

The country with the largest volume of antisera production was China (250K tons), comprising approx. 41% of total volume. Moreover, antisera production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the United States (72K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belgium (49K tons), with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China amounted to +23.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the United States (+6.7% per year) and Belgium (+0.5% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Antisera And Other Blood Fractions

In 2022, purchases abroad of antisera and other blood fractions decreased by -10.5% to 283K tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 48%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 316K tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, antisera imports reached $226.7B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of antisera imports in 2022 were Canada (35K tons), the United States (31K tons), Germany (21K tons), the Netherlands (21K tons), Austria (17K tons), France (13K tons), Italy (10K tons), Switzerland (10K tons), China (9.2K tons), Ireland (8.8K tons), Brazil (8.7K tons) and Belgium (7.1K tons), together recording 68% of total import. Mexico (6.2K tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ireland (with a CAGR of +48.6%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($54.1B), Germany ($28B) and Belgium ($16.6B) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 44% share of global imports. Switzerland, China, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Canada, Ireland, Austria, Brazil and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Among the main importing countries, Ireland, with a CAGR of +41.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

The average antisera import price stood at $801,769 per ton in 2022, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, antisera import price decreased by -11.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $903,653 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($2,331,784 per ton), while Mexico ($138,472 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.5%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

World Exports of Antisera And Other Blood Fractions

In 2022, overseas shipments of antisera and other blood fractions decreased by -57.2% to 316K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 131% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 740K tons, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, antisera exports stood at $230.4B in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 28%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports By Country

The United States (66K tons) and China (47K tons) represented the major exporters of antisera and other blood fractions in 2022, resulting at approx. 21% and 15% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Germany (26K tons), Poland (19K tons), Austria (18K tons) and Spain (15K tons), together making up a 25% share of total exports. Canada (12K tons), Singapore (11K tons), the UK (11K tons), the Netherlands (11K tons), South Korea (8.7K tons), Belgium (7.8K tons) and Ireland (7.4K tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +47.3%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ireland ($36B), Germany ($35.5B) and the United States ($31.6B) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 45% share of global exports. Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, the UK, South Korea, Singapore, Spain, Poland, China and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +63.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average antisera export price amounted to $728,075 per ton, increasing by 136% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($4,856,870 per ton), while China ($19,771 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
