In 2016, the global luggage exports amounted to 3.9M tonnes, standing approx. at the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, when export increased by 28% from the previous year level. Global luggage export peaked of 4M tonnes in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, luggage exports amounted to $59B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a remarkable expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, luggage exports decreased by -4.1% against its level of 2014. Global luggage export peaked of $62B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Luggage Exports By Country

In 2016, China (2.8M tonnes) was the largest exporter for luggage, achieving 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by China, Hong Kong SAR (468K tonnes), committing 12% share of total luggage exports. The following exporters - the U.S. (69K tonnes), Germany (66K tonnes), and Belgium (60K tonnes) occupied near 5% of total exports, each.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, China, Hong Kong SAR (+30.4%), and Germany (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China, Hong Kong SAR emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +30.4% from 2007-2016. The U.S. experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China, Hong Kong SAR (-10.8%), and China (-11.3%) significantly weakened its position in terms of the global exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($25B) remains the largest luggage supplier in the world, making up 42% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by China, Hong Kong SAR ($4.2B), with the share of 7% of global exports. It was followed by Germany, with the share of 3%.

In China, luggage exports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.6% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: China, Hong Kong SAR (-2.8% per year) and Germany (+5.7% per year).

Luggage Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for luggage amounted to $15 per kg, declining by -4.4% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a significant expansion from 2007 to 2016: the export price value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, when it surged by 27% year-to-year. Global luggage export peaked of $16 per kg in 2015, falling back in the following year.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($24 per kg), while China, Hong Kong SAR ($8,934 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of luggage export prices was attained by the U.S. (+7.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
