Australia's Luggage Price Reduces Notably to $19.2 per Unit

Australia Luggage Import Price in April 2023

In April 2023, the luggage price amounted to $19.2 per unit (CIF, Australia), waning by -9.8% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 22% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $24.4 per unit in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to April 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was India ($12.6 per unit), while the price for China amounted to $5.9 per unit.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.6%).

Australia Luggage Import Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In April 2023, the product with the highest price was handbags with outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather ($231 per unit), while the price for travel sets; for personal toilet, sewing, shoe or clothes cleaning ($632 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by handbags with outer surface of vulcanised fibre or of paperboard (+3.2%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In April 2023, approximately 3.4M units of luggage and handbags were imported into Australia; waning by -2.9% on March 2023 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 with an increase of 54% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 5.7M units. From September 2022 to April 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, luggage imports fell to $64M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. In general, imports recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when imports increased by 23% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 92M units in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to April 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials (1.6M units), cases and containers; trunks, suit-cases, vanity-cases, executive-cases, brief-cases, school satchels and similar containers, with outer surface of plastics or of textile materials (918K units) and travel sets; for personal toilet, sewing, shoe or clothes cleaning (660K units) were the main products of luggage imports to Australia, with a combined 94% share of total imports. These products were followed by handbags with outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather, handbags with outer surface of vulcanised fibre or of paperboard, cases and containers; trunks, suit-cases, vanity-cases, executive-cases, brief-cases, school satchels and similar containers, with outer surface of leather, of composition leather or of patent leather and cases and containers; trunks, suit-cases, vanity-cases, executive-cases, brief-cases, school satchels and similar containers, with outer surface of vulcanised fibre or of paperboard, which together accounted for a further 6.4%.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by handbags with outer surface of vulcanised fibre or of paperboard (with a CAGR of +5.1%), while imports for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the most traded types of luggage and handbags in Australia were handbags with outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather ($33M), handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials ($17M) and cases and containers; trunks, suit-cases, vanity-cases, executive-cases, brief-cases, school satchels and similar containers, with outer surface of plastics or of textile materials ($12M), with a combined 97% share of total imports. Australia Luggage Imports by Country

In April 2023, China (2.9M units) constituted the largest luggage supplier to Australia, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, luggage imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (148K units), more than tenfold.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China was relatively modest.

In value terms, China ($17M) constituted the largest supplier of luggage to Australia, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($1.9M), with a 2.9% share of total imports.
