Which Country Imports the Most Luggage and Handbags in the World?

Global luggage imports stood at 7.3M tonnes in 2016, leveling off at the previous year figure. In general, luggage imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, when imports increased by 2% from the previous year level. Global luggage import peaked in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

In value terms, luggage imports totaled $58B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a remarkable increase from 2007 to 2016: the total imports value increased at an average annual rate of +0.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, luggage imports decreased by -3.6% against its level of 2014. Over the period under review, global luggage imports reached its maximum level of $60B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Luggage Imports By Country

China (3.3M tonnes) was the key importing country with an import of around 3.3M tonnes, which amounted to 45% of total imports. China, Hong Kong SAR (468K tonnes) held a 6% share (based on tonnes) of global luggage imports, which put it in second place, following the U.S. (6%). The UK (205K tonnes), Mexico (203K tonnes), Germany (196K tonnes), Japan (170K tonnes), Singapore (166K tonnes), France (159K tonnes), and Italy (125K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. At the same time, Mexico (+26.6%), Singapore (+24.9%), and Germany (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mexico emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +26.6% from 2007-2016. Japan, France, and the UK experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the U.S. (-2.1%), China, Hong Kong SAR (-4.4%), and Italy (-5.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2016, the share of China, Hong Kong SAR increased by 3% percentage points, while Singapore (-2.0%), and Mexico (-2.4%) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the U.S. ($11B) constitutes the largest market for imported luggage worldwide, making up 19% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Japan ($5.1B), with the share of 9% of global imports. It was followed by China, Hong Kong SAR, with the share of 7%.

In the U.S., luggage imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2007-2016. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (+1.9% per year) and China, Hong Kong SAR (-0.1% per year).

Luggage Import Prices By Country

The average luggage import price stood at $7,916 per tonne in 2016, coming down by -1.7% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a prominent increase from 2007 to 2016: the import price value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, luggage import price decreased by -4.5% against its level of 2014. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when it surged by 18% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, average luggage import price attained its maximum level of $8,292 per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was Japan ($30 per kg), while China ($576 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of luggage import prices was attained by China (+20.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
