Which Country Consumes the Most Virgin Olive Oil in the World?

Global virgin olive oil consumption amounted to 3,133 thousand tonnes in 2015, coming up by +2.7% against the previous year level. Overall, the global virgin olive oil consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the output figure increased by +41% from the previous year level. In that year, the global virgin olive oil consumption attained its maximum volume of 3,507 thousand tonnes. From 2014 to 2015, the total virgin olive oil consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Virgin Olive Oil Consumption

With nearly 2,471 thousand tonnes, Spain became the world’s leading virgin olive oil consuming country, comprising 70% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Italy (211 thousand tonnes) and Tunisia (174 thousand tonnes), with a share of 6% and 5%, respectively. Moreover, virgin olive oil consumption in Spain surpassed the figures recorded by Italy more than tenfold. They were followed by Greece with a 4% of global consumption share and Morocco with a 4% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of virgin olive oil consumption in Spain stood at +9.5%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Italy (-11.8% per year) and Tunisia (-1.7% per year).

Per capita virgin olive oil in Spain was estimated at 53.58 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 3.37 kg/year. Spain was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of virgin olive oil, followed by Tunisia (15.46 kg/year), Greece (14.32 kg/year), Morocco (4.14 kg/year) and Italy (3.52 kg/year).

In Spain, per capita virgin olive oil consumption has grown noticably (+9.3% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Spain per capita consumption reached 53.58 kg/year as compared with 26.38 kg/year in 2007.
