Which Country Eats the Most Sour Cherries in the World?

Global sour cherry consumption amounted to 1,356 thousand tonnes in 2015, flattening at the previous year level. Overall, the global sour cherry consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the output figure increased by +21% from the previous year level. In that year, the global sour cherry consumption attained its maximum volume of 1,413 thousand tonnes. From 2014 to 2015, the total sour cherry consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Sour Cherries Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were Russia (208 thousand tonnes), the United States (203 thousand tonnes), Ukraine (196 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 40% of total consumption. They were followed by Poland with a 12% of global consumption share and Turkey with a 12% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of sour cherry consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by the United States (+7.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the consumption figures.

The highest levels of cherry (sour) per capita consumption was registered in Poland (4.69 kg/year), followed by Ukraine (4.36 kg/year), Turkey (2.26 kg/year), Russia (1.45 kg/year) and the United States (0.63 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of cherry (sour) was estimated at 1.89 kg/year in 2015.

In Poland, per capita cherry (sour) consumption has grown noticably (+6.7% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Poland per capita consumption reached 4.69 kg/year as compared with 2.80 kg/year in 2007.
