The average yield of sour cherries in the United States surged to X tons per ha in 2021, picking up by 39% on 2020 figures. Overall, the yield continues to indicate prominent growth. Exports from the U.S.
In 2021, exports of sour cherries from the United States declined to X tons, with a decrease of -7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 346%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sour cherry exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 383%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Korea (X tons) was the main destination for sour cherry exports from the United States, accounting for a 33% share of total exports. Moreover, sour cherry exports to South Korea exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X tons), twofold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Korea amounted to +34.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+33.5% per year) and China (+41.5% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for sour cherry exported from the United States were South Korea ($X), Japan ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 64% share of total exports. Vietnam, Australia, Taiwan (Chinese), Mexico, Canada and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +72.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sour cherry export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -13.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X tons of sour cherries were imported into the United States; dropping by -91.2% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 1,708% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sour cherry imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a precipitous shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 2,759%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
