US Structural Metal Imports Reach Low of $519M in Feb 2023
U.S. Fabricated Structural Metal Imports
In February 2023, the amount of fabricated structural metal imported into the United States dropped significantly to 161K tons, declining by -15.5% compared with January 2023. In general, imports saw a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 27% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of 248K tons. From April 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fabricated structural metal imports fell markedly to $519M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 24% month-to-month.

Imports by Country
Mexico (39K tons), China (26K tons) and India (23K tons) were the main suppliers of fabricated structural metal imports to the United States, together comprising 55% of total imports. Canada, Turkey, Germany, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Spain and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the biggest increases were in Germany (with a CAGR of +12.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mexico ($140M), Canada ($113M) and China ($53M) were the largest fabricated structural metal suppliers to the United States, together accounting for 59% of total imports. These countries were followed by India, South Korea, Germany, Turkey, Taiwan (Chinese), Vietnam, Spain and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 27%.
Among the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of +9.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In February 2023, the fabricated structural metal price stood at $3,223 per ton (CIF, US), approximately equating the previous month. Over the period from February 2022 to February 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 13% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $3,566 per ton. From January 2023 to February 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Canada ($5,104 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($1,610 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
