Hong Kong Manuka Imports
In September 2023, the amount of manuka imported into Hong Kong surged to 241 tons, picking up by 16% compared with the previous month. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 with an increase of 60% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 379 tons. From January 2023 to September 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, manuka imports surged to $1.6M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2023 with an increase of 146% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $2.2M. From August 2023 to September 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
In September 2023, China (114 tons) constituted the largest manuka supplier to Hong Kong, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, manuka imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Australia (26 tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) (19 tons), with a 7.9% share.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China amounted to -4.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Australia (+10.3% per month) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.4% per month).
In value terms, China ($378K) constituted the largest supplier of manuka to Hong Kong, comprising 24% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($164K), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 2.3% share.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from China stood at -3.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Australia (+4.4% per month) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-0.4% per month).
Import Prices by Country
In September 2023, the manuka price stood at $6,487 per ton (CIF, Hong Kong), rising by 28% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated modest growth from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, manuka import price decreased by -5.6% against July 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2023 an increase of 60% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $6,869 per ton. From August 2023 to September 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($24,261 per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($1,859 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
