Manuka Market Size in China

In 2020, after three years of decline, there was growth in the Chinese manuka market, when its value increased by X% to $X. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a noticeable expansion from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, consumption decreased by -X% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the market value increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. from 2017 to 2020, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, manuka exports totaled $X in 2020. In general, exports saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

The UK (X tonnes), Japan (X tonnes) and Belgium (X tonnes) were the main destinations of manuka exports from China, with a combined X% share of total exports. Poland, Spain, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Saudi Arabia (+X% per year), while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for manuka exported from China were Japan ($X), the UK ($X) and Belgium ($X), together comprising X% of total exports. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the maximum at $X per tonne in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China

In 2020, supplies from abroad of manuka decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the fifth consecutive year after five years of growth. In general, imports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, manuka imports expanded markedly to $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2020, New Zealand (X tonnes) constituted the largest manuka supplier to China, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, manuka imports from New Zealand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Australia (X tonnes), fourfold. Thailand (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from New Zealand amounted to +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (+X% per year) and Thailand (-X% per year).

In value terms, New Zealand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of manuka to China, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Australia ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value from New Zealand stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (+X% per year) and Thailand (+X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average manuka import price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, jumping by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 when the average import price increased by X% year-to-year. The import price peaked in 2020 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per tonne), while the price for Russia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
