Honey Imports in the EU Shot Up During the Pandemic

Honey imports in the EU grew up by 11% y-o-y to 308K tons or $897M in 2020. Among the European countries, Germany continues to hold its leading position in terms of import volume. Over the last year, Poland, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importers of honey in the EU, while supplies to Italy and Belgium decreased. The average import honey price in the EU remained almost unchanged from the previous year.
Imports of Honey in the EU
In 2020, the amount of honey imported in the EU expanded notably to 308K tons, surging by 11% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +11.4% from 2019 to 2020. In value terms, honey imports also grew remarkably to $897M in 2020 (IndexBox estimates).
Germany was the major importing country with an import of about 92K tons, which accounted for 30% of total imports. Poland (37K tons) ranks second in terms of total imports with a 12% share, followed by France (11%), Spain (10%), Italy (7.2%), the Netherlands (5.9%) and Belgium (5.1%).
In 2020, honey imports into Germany grew by +22.2% y-o-y. Poland (+26.0%), the Netherlands (+22.0%), Spain (+18.2%) and France (+6.4%) also featured tangible growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer in the EU. By contrast, Belgium (-1.7%) and Italy (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
In value terms, Germany ($280M) constitutes the largest market for imported honey in the EU, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by France ($129M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 9.3% share.
In 2020, the honey import price in the EU amounted to $2,912 per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the last year, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
