In value terms, slaked lime imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Cote d'Ivoire was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 37% of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (10%), Senegal (10%), Liberia (7.1%), Togo (5.4%), Mauritania (5%) and Ghana (4.8%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to slaked lime imports into Cote d'Ivoire stood at +6.8%. At the same time, Togo (+106.4%), Liberia (+14.4%), Senegal (+6.7%), Nigeria (+3.7%) and Ghana (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +106.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-5.9%) and Mauritania (-23.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Liberia, Togo, Nigeria and Ghana increased by +22, +5.9, +5.5, +5.4, +4.7 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 67% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Senegal, Togo, Ghana, Liberia and Mauritania, which together accounted for a further 29%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +101.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 19%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
