Nickel Ore Market Size in Western Africa

The West African nickel ore market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after four years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 1,227%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, nickel ore exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 1,097% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

The shipments of the one major exporters of nickel ores and concentrates, namely Cote d'Ivoire, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nickel ores and concentrates exports, with a CAGR of +43.3% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire increased by +4.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) also remains the largest nickel ore supplier in Western Africa.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 268% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Cote d'Ivoire.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +5.6% per year.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of nickel ores and concentrates increased by 100% to X kg, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a dramatic descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 7,613% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nickel ore imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a sharp shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 7,646%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X kg) represented the main importer of nickel ores and concentrates in Western Africa, mixing up 100% of total import.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nickel ores and concentrates imports, with a CAGR of -27.2% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest importers remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
