Potato Market Size in the UK

For the third year in a row, the UK potato market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -X% to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the market value increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, consumption failed to regain the momentum.

Potato Production in the UK

In value terms, potato production shrank to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. In general, production continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Potato production peaked at $X in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of potatoes in the UK fell modestly to X tonnes per ha in 2020, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the yield increased by X% year-to-year. The potato yield peaked at X tonnes per ha in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The potato harvested area in the UK stood at X ha in 2020, standing approx. at 2019. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when the harvested area increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to potato production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2020, approx. X tonnes of potatoes were exported from the UK; waning by -X% against the year before. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tonnes), Ireland (X tonnes) and Egypt (X tonnes) were the main destinations of potato exports from the UK, with a combined X% share of total exports. Belgium, Morocco, the Netherlands, Poland, Thailand and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Belgium, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for potato exported from the UK were Egypt ($X), Ireland ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, the Netherlands, Morocco, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and Poland, which together accounted for a further X saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average potato export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012 an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, export price reached the peak level of $X per tonne. from 2013 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average export prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Egypt, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the UK

After four years of decline, purchases abroad of potatoes increased by X% to X tonnes in 2020. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato imports soared to $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. from 2014 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Belgium (X tonnes), Israel (X tonnes) and the Netherlands (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of potato imports to the UK, together comprising X% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Cyprus, Ireland, France and Spain, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ireland, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato to the UK, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Israel ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value from Belgium totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (-X% per year) and the Netherlands (+X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average potato import price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, growing by X% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated tangible growth from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, potato import price increased by +X% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2020 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per tonne), while the price for France ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
