For the eighth consecutive year, the U.S. diode market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 6.6% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Diode Production in the U.S.

In value terms, diode production totaled $X in 2021. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from the U.S.

In 2021, overseas shipments of diodes, other than photosensitive or light emitting diodes were finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, diode exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

China (X units) was the main destination for diode exports from the United States, with a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, diode exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hong Kong SAR (X units), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Malaysia (X units), with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China totaled +12.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-24.3% per year) and Malaysia (-11.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for diode exported from the United States were Mexico ($X), China ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 51% share of total exports.

China, with a CAGR of +18.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average diode export price amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 216% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then declined modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+67.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the U.S.

In 2021, overseas purchases of diodes, other than photosensitive or light emitting diodes were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, diode imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest diode supplier to the United States, accounting for a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, diode imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X units), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at -5.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (-4.7% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-0.8% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of diodes, other than photosensitive or light emitting diodes to the United States, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled -1.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+6.7% per year) and Japan (-3.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average diode import price amounted to $X per unit, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 35%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per unit), while the price for Canada ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+25.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
