Titanium exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, jumping by 2,320% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports recorded significant growth. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, titanium exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mozambique was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), committing a 24% share of total exports.

Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of titanium sponge, powders, ingots and slabs. At the same time, South Africa (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +6.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Mozambique (+76 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-75.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest titanium supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 4.1% share of total exports.

In South Africa, titanium exports declined by an average annual rate of -7.4% over the period from 2012-2022.

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -63% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a dramatic slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 978% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-12.7%).

Imports in SADC

In 2022, titanium imports in SADC fell remarkably to X tons, waning by -64.3% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 653% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, titanium imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 1,029%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 75% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), making up a 21% share of total imports. Swaziland (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the titanium sponge, powders, ingots and slabs imports, with a CAGR of +32.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+26.8%) and Zambia (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of South Africa (+65 p.p.) and Swaziland (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Zambia (-7.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 193% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
