South Africa (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) represented the main exporters of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) in 2023, reaching near X% and X% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons), together achieving a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, molluscs imports dropped sharply to $X in 2023. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2022, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2023, South Africa (X tons) represented the key importer of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus), making up X% of total imports. Namibia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Mauritius (X%).
